The chimney industry recently lost one of its true pioneers with the passing of Royal Edwards.
While many knew Royal for his remarkable technical expertise, those fortunate enough to work alongside him knew something even more important—his passion for educating others and his unwavering commitment to making our industry safer, more knowledgeable, and more professional. But many younger members of the industry likely do not know of his many contributions.
Royal was more than a chimney expert.
He was a teacher.
He was a mentor.
He was a leader.
And throughout his career, he dedicated himself to advancing the chimney industry and those who worked within it.
Many may not realize that Royal's service to the National Chimney Sweep Guild began long before he became a member of its staff. In the Guild's early years, he generously volunteered countless hours of his time, knowledge, and personal resources to help strengthen the organization and support the education of chimney professionals across North America. Like so many of the pioneers who built the NCSG, Royal believed in giving back to the profession that had given him so much.
As his reputation for technical excellence continued to grow, Royal transitioned into the role of Technical Director for the National Chimney Sweep Guild. In that position, he became one of the industry's most respected technical authorities. Through seminars, technical articles, committee work, and countless conversations with chimney professionals, he helped shape the Guild's educational programs and raised the level of technical knowledge throughout the profession.
Later in his career, Royal chose another path—one that allowed him to continue serving the industry independently. Through Royal Edwards Technical Services, he became a highly respected consultant, educator, expert witness, and technical advisor. His independent work allowed him to assist contractors, manufacturers, attorneys, insurance companies, and homeowners while continuing to teach the principles of proper chimney performance, venting, combustion, diagnostics, and fire safety.
Royal's influence extended well beyond the classroom and the Guild. He devoted countless hours serving on technical committees and working with organizations such as the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), where he contributed to the ongoing development and refinement of NFPA 211, the nationally recognized standard for chimneys, fireplaces, vents, and solid fuel-burning appliances. He also worked with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and collaborated with numerous code organizations, standards committees, manufacturers, and industry leaders. His knowledge, experience, and practical approach helped shape many of the codes, standards, and recommended practices that continue to guide chimney professionals today.
Throughout every stage of his career, Royal devoted countless hours to helping chimney professionals understand not just what to do, but why it mattered. Whether he was teaching about draft, combustion, venting systems, chimney failures, building pressure, or carbon monoxide hazards, his goal was always the same: to make every chimney professional better equipped to protect the families they served.
Those who attended his seminars remember his unique ability to take complex technical concepts and explain them in a way that was practical, understandable, and immediately applicable in the field. He challenged us to think critically, ask better questions, and never stop learning.
Royal understood something that has become a defining principle of today's chimney industry: Knowledge builds credibility.
He believed our profession deserved to be recognized not simply as chimney sweeps, but as educated technical specialists whose work protects lives, homes, and families.
Many of today's best practices can trace their roots to the educational foundation and technical leadership that Royal helped establish. Every time a chimney professional references NFPA 211, follows accepted inspection procedures, or applies building science principles to solve a complex chimney problem, there is a good chance they are benefiting—directly or indirectly—from Royal's decades of dedication to improving our profession.
His influence reached far beyond the technicians he trained directly. Every company whose employees attended one of his classes, every customer whose home became safer because of what those technicians learned, every committee that benefited from his insight, and every future instructor who built upon his teachings is part of Royal Edwards' enduring legacy.
Our industry has changed dramatically over the past four decades.
Technology has evolved.
Building science has advanced.
Codes have become more sophisticated.
Yet many of those codes, standards, and technical principles continue to bear the influence of Royal's work. His contributions through the NCSG, NFPA, CPSC, and other technical organizations continue to guide the chimney industry in ways that many professionals may never fully realize.
Professionalism.
Integrity.
Education.
Continuous Improvement.
These values continue to define the very best within our industry.
Perhaps Royal's greatest contribution wasn't a particular seminar, technical paper, committee meeting, or code revision.
It was the example he set.
He reminded all of us that true professionals never stop learning, never stop teaching, never stop asking questions, and never stop striving to improve the profession they love.
The National Chimney Sweep Guild—and indeed the entire chimney industry—is stronger today because of Royal Edwards' dedication, leadership, technical expertise, and willingness to share his knowledge.
While we mourn his passing, we also celebrate a life that made a lasting difference.
His lessons continue to be taught.
His influence continues to be felt.
His work continues to shape our standards.
And his legacy lives on in every technician who approaches this profession with curiosity,
professionalism, and a commitment to excellence.
